Ⅱ. 3. 대상문제의 풀이방법
대상을 고르라는 문제는 쉬운 문제에 속한다. 변별력이 떨어지기 때문에 수년 전에는 2문제 출제하던 것을 현재는 43번부터 이어지는 긴 박스 타워 지문에서 한 문제 출제하고 있다. 수험생으로서 실수로 틀리면 꽤나 아까울 것이다.
보기가 되는 he,his,him,she,her등 은 그 자체의 모습이 같기 때문에 이것만으로 구별할 수는 없고 앞에서부터 문맥을 보면서 구별해야 할 것이다. 보통은 2명이 나오고 좀 복잡하면 3명 정도가 지문상 나타나는데, 풀고 나서 헷갈려서 앞으로 다시 와보는 일이 없도록 첫 번째 나온 대상을 선명히 표시해 놓고 보기에 줄을 이어 잘 기억되도록 하면 좋다.
그래서 1번 보기와 2번 보기가 같은 것이면 3,4,5중에 답이 있을 것이고, 1번과 2번이 다른 경우라면 3번만 보더라도 답이 나올 것이다. 이 때 가벼운 마음으로 정답 여부를 구별해 보면 될 것이다. 한편 출제된 지명인 Albania를 인명으로 생각한 특이한 제자가 있었다.
아래의 문제는 2023년 10월에 마지막으로 치루어진 고3 모의고사문제이다.
위에서 말한바와 같이 2명의 이름이 나와있고 순서를 골라야 되는데 순서문제의 풀이방법은 다음에 설명할 예정이다.

Deeply moved by her sorrow, Emily resolved to help revive Martha’s creative spirit. So, she organized an art exhibition in the town’s community center.
밑줄 친 (a)~(e) 중에서 가리키는 대상이 나머지 넷과 다른 것은?

풀이방법을 생각해보면 선결적으로 순서를 맞추고(ADBC),
이름으로 나타난 Emily와 Martha에 선명하게 표시한다. 그다음 내용에 따라 위에서 말한 대로 1,2가 같은 것인지
판단해 보면 답을 찾을 수 있는 것인데 내용상 (b)가 답이 되는 것이다.
다만 특이한 점은 보기 중에서 (b)만 she이고 나머지는 모두 her인데 이런 것은 출제 시 고려의 대상이 아니니
학생들은 헛된 고민은 않기를 바란다. 이런 문제도 찍는 것은 수험생으로서 좀 부족한 모습이 되는 것이다.

공식해설에서도
'Emily는 자신이 계획한 깜짝 이벤트에 Martha가 어떻게 반응할지 궁금해하며 그녀의 도착을 애타게 기다렸다.'
라고 기재하였다. 필자가 말한 대로 궁금해하면서 라고 간단히 해석할 것이다.
그리고 (D)에 나와있는 hardship이나 sorrow라는 단어를 보면 출제되는 adversity나 grief에 비하여 고3문제로는
상당히 쉽게 나와있는 것을 알 수 있는데 긴 지문임을 감안한 것이 아닌가 하는 생각이 든다.
아무리 어려워도 단어는 외우면 끝이랍니다.
