Ⅰ.3. (6) 동격
필자는 영어지문을 독해할 때 쉼표를 잘 보라고 여러 번 이야기 한 바가 있다.
동격은 A,B 의 형태를 갖고 있다.
A와 B를 해석했을 때 내용상 같은 것이면 동격관계가 된다. 해석은 B인 A라고 하면 된다는 점에서 앞에서 본 쉼표의 관계사나 분사구문에 비하여 훨씬 간단하다.
출제는 주로 주어 뒤에서 주어와 동사 사이를 벌려주는 모습으로 나타난다.
예를 들면 'xx지역의yy대학교의zz학과 교수인 aa는'이라고 출제가 되는데
실질적으로 주어는 aa 하나일 것으로 해석상 정답 여부를 가르지는 못하는 경우가 많다. 힌트에는 해당할 수도 있다고 가볍게 생각했으면 한다. 이 부분에 착안하여 쉼표와 쉼표사이는 지워버리고 해석하라는 분들이 있다고 들었다. 그러나 이는 읽어보고 나서 알 수 있다는 점에서 실익이 적다는 것은 앞에서 밝힌 바 있다.
쉼표가 나와서 길어지는 경우로 필자가 문제삼은 관계사나 분사구문 또는 병렬구조에 비하여 확연히 쉽게 느껴진다. 그래도 주어와 동사사이가 벌어지는 경우가 있다는 점에서 학생입장에서는 주의를 기울일것이다.
예문1: J.K.Rowling, the author of the famous Harry Potter series, has personally corresponded with several dying children who were fans of her books and with parents of children who have died. (2016년10월 고3 전국모의고사)
이는 중학교교과서에서부터 가장 많이 보이는 형태인 사람이름의 동격인데 보통 풀이에 있어서 득점과 무관한 경우가 많다.
예문2: Architects might say a machine can never design an innovative or impressive building because a computer cannot be “creative.” Yet consider the Elbphilharmonie, a new concert hall in Hamburg, which contains a remarkably beautiful auditorium composed of ten thousand interlocking acoustic panels. (B) It is the sort of space that makes one instinctively think that only a human being — and a human with a remarkably refined creative sensibility, at that — could design something so aesthetically impressive. Yet the auditorium was, in fact, designed algorithmically, using a technique known as “parametric design.” (C) The architects gave the system a set of criteria, and it generated a set of possible designs for the architects to choose from. Similar software has been used to design lightweight bicycle frames and sturdier chairs, among much else. (A) Are these systems behaving “creatively”?
